Lighting creates atmosphere and character in a living room. Using light from a number of different sources, you can create layers of light that overlap with stunning effect. Atmospheric lighting adds romance to a room. Turn down dimmers and switch off any lights that are too bright leaving soft pools of light radiating in the corners. Accessories like candles grouped together or tea lights in ornamental glass jars are an excellent way to create mellow, ambient lighting.

Soft lighting can be created with a range of lamps placed around the living room either on the floor, side tables, coffee tables or other furniture pieces. A tall, floor mounted lamp placed near a reclining sofa or your favourite leather recliner chair creates the perfect reading spot. If you have a writing desk in the living room, a stylish desk lamp provides sufficient light when you want it.

Character lighting includes sophisticated light fixtures like chandeliers, rise and fall pendants and contemporary glass fittings that define the style of your living room while adding interest and contrast.

Strategically placed mirrors can add sparkle to a room. Placed opposite a window, a large vintage mirror can increase the amount of natural light. For an absolutely sparkling effect, arrange a group of mirrors together on a feature wall. Other accessories like mirrored or silver furniture, glass or crystal candlesticks also catch and reflect light.
